Now you can log Complain if Restaurant is charging GST more than 5%

The Government is in GST Council meeting held on 10 November 2017 has decided to reduce rate on 150+ items. The major change was in relation to restaurants service provider. The rate on restaurant was 18% which was reduce to just 5%

The reduction is effective from today 15 November 2017. Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates on Restaurant’s will be 5% from existing 18% from

The government has rolled out Helpline Number 1800225900 (Maharashtra). The Government said “We have rolled out helpline for consumers. They can contact us if restaurants or hotels fail to charge a uniform GST rate of 5%, instead of 12% or 18% earlier depending on AC or non-AC restaurants. We will take action against such hoteliers.” Further added “Government is sure the hotels will abide by the government decision and pass on the benefit to consumers. In case people feel hotels are not passing on the relief, they can contact us on our helpline 1800225900

"We have asked hotels and chemists to keep the board displaying the toll free number in their shops and also display their GST number," said Government.

This facility is currently is in state of Maharashtra and going ahead many state will follow to provide helpline numbers.

Following additional points should be considered

1) A meal in an AC restaurant should no longer see a bill reflecting 18 per cent GST (9 per cent CGST + 9 per cent SGST). Instead, it should reflect GST at 5 per cent (ideally 2.5 per cent CGST + 2.5 per cent SGST). Any divergence from this figure should be flagged to the restaurant managers

2) There have been several instances witnessed in the past few months where restaurants have been charging consumers GST without getting registered under the taxation structure. So its better to check if the restaurant is registered. Every business entity registered under GST is allotted a GST number. Restaurants are no different and your bill should necessarily reflect the 15-digit GST number.

You can also register your complaint by calling 1800114000, the national consumer helpline number. You can also flag your grievances with top authorities on the official Twitter handles of GST (askGST_Goi) and the Finance Ministry (@FinMinIndia).

Please get your facts right before posting such articles on internet and misleading the public!! Aerated beverages like Coke, Sprite etc are under 18% GST and will be reflected accordingly in the bill!! Tobacco is under 28% GST and will reflect accordingly in the bill. So by saying statement like "A meal in an AC restaurant should no longer see a bill reflecting 18 per cent GST (9 per cent CGST + 9 per cent SGST). Instead, it should reflect GST at 5 per cent (ideally 2.5 per cent CGST + 2.5 per cent SGST). Any divergence from this figure should be flagged to the restaurant managers" you my friend are misleading the customers and creating more confusion during such times. Did I see "Tax Expert" written under your name?!!!!!
